Anaëlle Bueno Patin (BOLSTER PhD researcher) and the project’ coordinator Michiel Stapper, both from Tilburg University, have published an article in Environmental Politics Journal: “The Discursive Politics of Marginalisation: An Intersectional Analysis of European Just Transition Plans”.

The article focuses on analysing how marginalised communities are addressed in the European Commission’s just transition policies, which aim to achieve a carbon-neutral society by 2050. Using an intersectional approach, the study examines transition plans across various European regions and identifies three main discourses on marginalization: a simplified discourse using homogeneous categories, a labor-focused discourse, and a diversity discourse. While the diversity discourse acknowledges the intersecting identities and varied experiences of marginalized communities, the study reveals that these groups often lack agency in influencing the discourses or shaping the policies that affect them.

This open-access article provides valuable insights into just transition policies and the need for more inclusive decision-making.
