A few weeks ago, an inspiring group of policy makers, NGOs and researchers from more than 40 regions came together in Kyustendil, Bulgaria, for BOLSTER’s Transferability Workshop, all committed to making the Just Transition in Europe a reality. United by a shared commitment to Justice in Europe, we drafted a collective letter to the European Commission about the future of the Just Transition.

Right now, the European Commission is reviewing the Just Transition Fund – a critical moment to influence policy. Our research shows that without strong territorial support, regions in transition risk being left behind, deepening inequality, political polarization, and social unrest.

This is why we are calling for a stronger, more inclusive Just Transition that truly supports communities on the ground.

Our key demands to the European Commission:

  1. Strengthen the Just Transition to counter political polarization
  2. Support local NGOs and foster inclusive governance
  3. Unlock the potential of Just Transition regions as engines for reindustrialization
  4. Make funding more effective and accessible
  5. Foster local ownership to accelerate industrial transformation
