We’re pleased to announce the release of the latest BOLSTER Policy Report on Study Regions, titled:

“How Three European Regions Governed Economic Transitions: Lessons from Southeast North Brabant (NL), Cluj County (RO), and the Basque Country (ES)”.

This in-depth report examines how the three BOLSTER study regions have navigated significant economic transitions in recent decades, offering valuable insights and inspiration for today’s Just Transition regions. The report presents practical examples, governance reflections, and innovative approaches – brought to life through clear visuals including maps, diagrams, photographs, and a professionally designed layout.

Available on BOLSTER website and also on Zenodo: https://zenodo.org/records/15471541 (DOI coming soon)

What’s inside?

The report is structured around four key thematic areas:

  1. Governance networks
  • Who are the main governance actors, and how do they collaborate?
  • Who is included—or excluded—from these networks?
  1. Governance and policy-making processes
  • What roles do the public, private, academic, and civil society sectors play?
  • What new organisations emerge in the space between these sectors?
  • How do multi-level governance structures (EU, national, regional, local) shape the process?

III. Emerging vulnerabilities

  • What social, economic, political, cultural, or spatial vulnerabilities arise in regions undergoing transition?
  1. Innovative initiatives and inspiring cases for policymakers
  • Concrete examples of initiatives that can guide and inspire current Just Transition efforts.

The authors, Anastasiya Ansteeg and Michiel Stapper, from Tilburg University, hope this report will serve as a useful resource for policymakers, practitioners, and researchers working on just, inclusive, and sustainable transitions across Europe.
